Goal

To Design a mobile app that allows user to order food online and to reserve table to Dine- in.

Understanding the user

User Research

I have created empathy map by conducting interviews to the users to understand their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to cook meals and Homemaker who wish to spend her family special days like birthdays and anniversary at the restaurant and feel special.

During the research I was able to find that the user wants easy to use app design, curb side pick up options, menu with pictures, waiting hours and clear customizing Vegetarian and Non Vegetarian options.

User Personas

EMMA

Emma is a busy working software engineer who needs contactless food pickup options because she wish to spend a peaceful evening with her family without the hazel of getting ready to go out.

Age: 34

Education: Bachelors Degree
Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia
Family: Married, two children
Occupation: Software Engineer

Goals

  • Find a restaurants with customizable menu with healthier replacement options.

  • While picking up the food, there should be little to no person contact.

  • To mention pickup waiting time on the app.

Frustrations

  • Menu cannot be customizable while ordering via app.

  • Food pickup waiting time is not mentioned while ordering which make it difficult to guess the food arrival time.

  • Expects a contact less pickup

ANNIE

Annie is a Homemaker who needs restaurant with good ambience and minimum waiting hours because wish to spend her family special days like birthdays and anniversary at the restaurant and feel special.

Age: 40

Education: Masters in HR management
Hometown: Nevada, Las Vegas
Family: Married, One child
Occupation: Homemaker

Goals

  • To find a restaurant which has a good variety of food on the menu and vegetarian options .

  • Restaurants to follow safety and hygiene.

  • To have a table available or at least should not be waiting for a longer durations.

Frustrations

  • ”Small and Sufficient”. Don’t want 100’s of items on the menu with slight change in the ingredients.

  • Difference in vegetarian and non vegetarian options.

  • Pictures of Restaurant’s ambience are not available in the app to be able to choose.

  • Waiting for a long time on weekends to be seated.

User Journey Map

Mapping Emma’s and Annies user journey revealed that how it would be helpful to have access to a dedicated food app with customizable menu options and reserving the table in advance to avoid the waiting hours.

Starting the Design

Paper wireframes

After empathizing with the users and building the user journey map to identify user pain, I proceeded to draft my paper wireframes. I wanted to have clutter free quick and easy ordering process for the users.

Digital wireframes

Low-fidelity Prototype

Based on the user journey map I was able to understand user pain point and create a low fidelity prototype.

Usability study: Findings

After conducting 2 rounds of usability studies, below I have mentioned my findings.

Round 1 findings
  • Most of the participant felt that the checkout process was lengthy.

  • Participants were confused about the “Today’s Special” and “Menu”

Round 2 findings
  • Users were happy with the app.

Refining the Design

Mockups

High-fidelity Prototype

The final High- fidelity prototype aimed to achieve the results obtained from the usability study.

Takeaways

Impact

Users are really happy with the app which meets the requirement of the user.

What I learned

The most interesting part of this case study was conducting user research and understanding the pain point helps to identify the user need. Creating High fidelity prototypes was interesting process.
